The Ancient Desire
Adam King
March 31, 2009

Longing. Passion. The ascension of enlightenment from unmitigated darkness. We don't really want world peace, do we? I mean sure, a greater emphasis on the peace side of things would be nice, but all-encompassing world-wide peace? That would create a complete lack of balance in the force. We grow from the negative, and learn from the wrong and the evil. The wars can stop, but we can't stop our reliance on the benefits of the word "no". Nobody wants to live in that weird mormon-heaven in South Park. Here's an excellent example of the evolutions that arise from denial... The German translation has been included to account for all the mail we've been getting from our Eastern-European brethren who've had trouble reading some articles. Borscht!

Thoughts on One of the Three Free Dead Shows
Live Music Beth
March 31, 2009

I got this email from State of Mind contributor Matt Iselin this morning and thought I'd share. He hit the first - acoustic at Angel Orensanz Center - of the three free shows The Dead played in NYC yesterday‚ and his thoughts on it go something like this:

Very surprised that it wasn't as packed as i thought it might be. But then again‚ i would imagine people up and down the east coast entered the raffle and some people just couldn't get there for a 5pm show...although the dude next to me drove up from W Virginia that am.

That space is amazing... seriously beautiful. phil‚ bobby and warren get up on stage and everyone in the room was stoked. And then Bobby forgot when to start singing in Dire Wolf‚ and that pretty much was par for the course for the rest of the night. That's not to say it wasn't great to see this show...it truly was (bobby's forgetfulness notwithstanding) . It made me remember how impressive the grateful dead's catalog is in respect to songwriting. Even when the 2nd tune in‚ birdsong‚ started to meander into some lifeless acoustic jamming‚ POW... the 3 part harmony of the bridge just slays you. The show picked up some steam from there‚ when after Cumberland‚ someone screamed out "We Miss Jerry!"...to which phil responds‚ "what‚ you think we don't?" Big cheers and laughs led right into a seriously fun version of Pride of Cucamonga. Then Bobby's shining moment happened to come in a beautiful version of Lazy River Rd. He hit all the lyrics and they truly nailed this one. Warren's soloing was really inspired and nice to hear over the quiet acoustic vibe. Casey Jones and Ripple ended the set.

And then it was 6:15pm and i was home by 6:45 after a dead show (set). Truly surreal.

Queen City Sound Trailer
Mike McKinley
March 27, 2009

What is the Queen City Sound? In other words, for those of you who don't live here in my community, what does Burlington, Vermont sound like? Our friend and filmmaker Kieran Delaney is investigating this question in a documentary he's working on, Queen City Sound, scheduled to be finished in June. He asked some musicians, journalists and enthusiasts in town to sit in front of the camera and tell him what they think.

The music in this town is a big part of why I live here. Not only does the local community produce a top notch wide array of music, but we can also bring all different types of touring acts here and it works. It's worth stopping here on tour. And a lot of times, we leave the impression that it's worth coming back. We have it good. I'm continuously amazed at how well live music does here, especially the diversity--everything from hip-hop to punk shows work, and we have a successful jazz festival every year. Right around the corner from where I live is the Radio Bean, and any given night I can walk in there and hear something incredible. One night you have great honky tonk music, the next could be blissed-out free jazz and the next night experimental noise/drone could have the entire room captivated. There are always people listening. It's a big part of the reason five years ago we thought, "I think we can launch a music magazine out of this town. There's an infrastructure here to support to it."

Below is the trailer for the documentary. From State of Mind, Matt Bushlow and I were interviewed. It was great to talk about the music scene here. I mentioned in the interview that I recently had a conversation with my college roommate about Burlington. Since we left school in Syracuse, N.Y. over ten years ago, he's lived in Tucson, Washington D.C., and St. Louis. He's experienced the music scenes in those cities and still feels that Burlington has something better. The thing he said that really resonated with me was that he thought that per capita Burlington has the best music scene in the country. I agree. Hey, we're not New York City, but shit, we're also not New York City.
