Song of the Day - "Loan Me A Dime" - Boz Scaggs
November 25, 2008
The other day when I posted "Hey Jude" by Wilson Pickett to honor Duane Allman's birthday‚ we received an email from Tom Hamilton (American Babies‚ Brothers Past):
Hey guys‚ just saw the article on Pickett's "Hey Jude" with Duane playing. If you were looking to extend the celebration of Duane's b-day one more day (I consider him to be THE greatest guitarist) I would suggest spotlighting Boz Scaggs' "Loan Me a Dime." I would say that very few people have any idea about this song‚ let alone the fact that it is probably some of the best guitar work recorded.
I attached the track. Please‚ PLEASE‚ stop what you are doing. Turn off your phone‚ sign out of IM. DO NOT listen to this through computer speakers! Listen through proper speakers. This song kills‚ the band is hott‚ and Duane Allman is about to put on a clinic on how to play the guitar.
I love getting emails like this -- it screams passion about music. So‚ yes‚ of course‚ we did this proper. We listened to it loud in the cozy confines of the SoM Headquarters. For 13 minutes‚ we sat and listened. Talk about a perfect vibe and such an appropriate tune!

Mr. T... It Wasn't a Dream
November 21, 2008
Wow. Let me say that again. Wow.
Last night I went to a great show at Higher Ground: Rubblebucket‚ Spiritual Rez‚ and Strength in Numbers. Let me tell you‚ Rubblebucket is on fire. It's been lovely to see them progress in the little over a year they've been together. Amazing.
But this isn't about them. It's about what happened after I saw them. I came home and realized that I could catch The Colbert Report. But it comes on kinda late - 12:35 - and I was really tired and... I fell asleep on the couch. I woke up hours later while having a crazy dream about Mr T. on an infomerical‚ helping to sell cookware and using his catchphrase "I pity the fool." In a fog‚ I made my way to my proper sleeping spot‚ my bed.
I just remembered this dream a bit ago... and then slowly realized... it wasn't a dream. I googled and found this. It's real. Enjoy!
Project/Object Show Canceled Due to Gail Zappa
November 21, 2008
Just got this email update from André Cholmondeley of Project/Object:
Hello Folks
sorry to announce this -- you may have seen it on various websites by now.
Adelaide Gail Zappa is at it again - her usual‚ yearly waste of legal fees‚ to scare clubs into backing out of shows with many groups‚ including ours. I am proud to say -- that in 12 years or more - she has ONLY succeeded in getting THREE gigs cancelled‚ out of 100s‚ maybe over 1000 shows.....
So-- TONIGHT‚ is CANCELLED!!
BILL's BAR‚ Boston MA
21 Nov 2008
Sorry about the inconvenience........
"Due to Adelaide Gail Zappa and her incessant‚ worldwide legal attacks on fans honoring Frank Zappa's music‚ and attempts to negate his request (according to the Zappa hotline‚ Dec 1993) to "Play My Music"‚ the Project/Object show for Fri 21 Nov 2008‚ at Bill's Bar in Boston‚ has been cancelled.
Stand by for further details on the threatening letters. All other shows‚ have proceeded fantastically or are proceeding as planned‚ since what we do is 100% legal under US law. It's sad that lawyers are being enriched every year by this useless letter-writing campaign (all clubs also get threat letters).
FYI - The band Ugly Radio Rebellion‚ who you'll remember was under attack for Dec. 2007 shows‚ just had to cancel all their Nov 2008 shows due to a couple of clubs' unfounded fears of Adelaide Gail Zappa suing them. Bogus Pomp in Florida also recently was attacked for celebrating this music. Artists in Germany also continue to be attacked. Other artists worldwide performing shows‚ or legally releasing recordings of Zappa music are regularly attacked.
What a waste of good money that could be used to release more Zappa music......
We are not breaking any laws and we will continue to perform Frank Zappa music for you. And maybe even a little of the music of Mozart‚ Stravinsky‚ Gustav Holst‚ The Seeds ('Pushing Too Hard' used in 'Sy Borg')‚ Yes (1984 'Bamboozled' solo section)‚ The Beatles (medley played on 1988 Zappa tour)‚ Richard Berry (Frank quoted "Louie Louie" DOZENS of times)‚ Herbie Hancock (riffs quoted in 'Greggery Peccary')‚ Culture Club ('I'll tumble for ya')‚ The Doors ('The End'‚ 'Light My Fire')..and on and on and on....
I am conducting research into where and when Frank Zappa got permission to perform‚ record or parodize ALL of these and many‚ many other various artists' music. Of course sometimes he sought permission‚ and when RECORDED and RELEASED‚ he certainly paid mechanical royalties. But certainly many times he didn't.
For a guy who has a LARGE part of his art based on USING THE MATERIAL OF OTHERS‚ his estate is strangely‚ hypocritically opposed to any one else doing the same!

Song of the Day: "Hey Jude" - Wilson Pickett
November 21, 2008
I heard this tune on Vermont's 102.9‚ The Album Station this morning. Every once in a while I'll tune into "Rock & Roll Birthdays‚" where the DJ‚ Russ Kinsley‚ will give a lengthy and enthusiastic talk about a musician and then play an hour or so of tunes spanning their career. I love it for its sheer enthusiasm -- no fluff on this station‚ they play what they love.
Today was the second day celebrating Duane Allman's birthday‚ who would have been 62 yesterday (11/20). I was blown away to hear that he was just shy of 25 when he died. Certainly the music he played and left behind surpassed his age.
As the story goes‚ he was the guitarist on this session with Wilson Pickett at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals‚ Alabama in late 1968 and suggested they cover the Beatles' "Hey Jude." Russ informed listeners that at that time nobody covered the Beatles‚ and "Hey Jude" was still on the charts. Wilson was obviously skeptical‚ but Duane convinced him by changing up the arrangement a bit. Hearing this track this morning blew me away -- the warmth of the instruments and‚ of course‚ Wilson's voice! Damn‚ chills…

Looking for a theme song to accompany the current economic malaise? Slide over to the Internet Archive and give a listen to Blind Alfred Reed's old-timey protest classic "How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live."
Born in the hills of Virginia in 1880‚ fiddle player‚ singer‚ and songwriter Reed cut his first acetates at pioneer record producer Ralph Peer's infamous Bristol‚ Tennessee recording sessions of 1927. Reed didn't make as big a splash as some of the others at the sessions‚ which included The Carter Family and "Singin' Brakeman" Jimmie Rodgers. But his records sold‚ and he continued to record for two more years.
"How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live‚" Reed's best-known tune‚ was recorded on December 4‚ 1929‚ little more than a month after the start of the Great Depression. It includes a call for populist action that characterizes much of his work:
Oh‚ it's time for every man to be awake‚
We pay fifty cents a pound when we ask for steak.
When we get our package home‚
A little wad of paper with a gristle and bone
Tell me how can a poor man stand such times and live?
Reed didn't limit his critiques to economic conditions. He railed against hypocritical preachers‚ drunkards‚ lawyers‚ women who bobbed their hair‚ and generally anyone who flouted Biblical principles as he interpreted them. But at the core of his best work was an unyielding compassion for the ordinary man's suffering at the hands of the rich and powerful.
Blind Alfred Reed recorded only twenty songs. He lived most of his life in obscurity and died in 1956 at age 75‚ probably of starvation. But he left a legacy of protest songs that paved the way for social activist singers from Woody Guthrie to Michael Franti. To check out Reed's catalogue‚ try Blind Alfred Reed 1927-1929 (Document Records‚ 2005) or Always Lift Him Up-A Tribute to Blind Alfred Reed. This 2007 Proper Records compilation includes covers of Reed tunes by Kathy Mattea‚ Connie Smith‚ Tim and Mollie O'Brien‚ and Ray Benson of Asleep at the Wheel.
