on a related note, lefsetz sez:
40. Conor Oberst & the Mystic Valley Band "Outer South"
Sales this week: 13,913
Debut
Can we all finally agree, that Mr. Oberst did not live up to his potential? Maybe that he wasn't that good to begin with?

Lefsetz talks a lot. The funny thing about him is that so much of his opinion on music is based on the business and nothing to do with sound. But then he goes on and on and on and on about how good the music was in his day, etc.
Yawn. Sounds tired. Good music is happening all over if your ears are open. You're not going to find it if you're looking for it in sales numbers and in the way people consume it.

re Lefsetz--read a little closer: his passion for music underlines his views on the business of it: he has roots but he doesn't appear to be stuck in the past....or the present

Yeah, sort of. Like I said, he talks a lot. I think half the time that's accurate – he’s very passionate and perhaps not stuck in the past or present. The other half, he delivers commentary about music based on business, like the one above about Conor Oberst. His album sold 13k copies in its first week; therefore he’s not that good? Didn’t live up to his potential? That’s some stupid shit that has nothing to do with sound. It’s funny when he talks about the failures of manufactured pop musicians. But that’s not Conor… he’s been pumping out great records for years. Records that people are going to listen to forever.
Read the cover story on Dan Deacon… Adam King’s been reading Lefsetz for years, and made a great point in the piece about how he often misses the mark by being stuck in his old school thought process. And don’t get me wrong, I really dig reading Lefsetz – but he talks a lot. And when you talk that much, half of what you say gets kind of salty and cloudy.
Anyway, enjoy the new Wilco.

perusing the comments here -about leftsetz: i delete more than i read. it reminds me of the editorial column in the newspaper i used to read when i was growing up, where the guy had to produce an opinion everyday. it was really stale a lot of the time, other times way, way off, and every once in a while you would cheer about how brilliant and passionate it was. you appreciate it, but you can't take it too seriously.

Getting here a little late, but I have to say this: What does Lefsetz's opinion of whether or not Conor lived up to his potential (like he's dead and his career is over or something) have to do with Wilco?
Also, though Lefsetz is as enthusiastic and passionate about music as any of us, he's also obsessed with the industry and covers bands that are boring as hell. He covers them because they sell units. So, in his world, AC/DC is more relevant than Dan Deacon, which I can understand. But who really gives a shit about a new AC/DC record being sold at WalMart? Lefsetz does. Because it's part of a new paradigm, which is part of what he covers. So he'll cover a smart person like Jonathan Colton, who hasn't sold many units at all. Bob likes him largely because Colton uses the web to make great shit happen.
So, I think we're talking about another side of Bob Lefsetz here: There's passionate Bob, who loves "Crystal River" by Mudcrutch, but not because of sales--because of the MUSIC!!!! And there's marketing/sales Bob who will go on and on about AC/DC or The Eagles being at WalMart. (Until AC/DC drops back off the map, then he can write about that.)
Anyway...
