Taking a scene directly out of Almost Famous, the cover of the latest Nocturnals creation has Potter as the obvious focal point. The other band members are out of focus, blurry, and pushed to the background.
The Gwen Stefani syndrome has finally taken hold.
I had high hopes for Grace and the crew. Venturing out west to seek fame and fortune, it seems the glitz and glam has brainwashed the group of their real aptitude: playing rock-n-fuckin'-roll.
Lead guitarist Scott Tournet is almost nonexistent throughout the entire record. With never-ending potential, the six-string ace comes off more like a hired studio musician going through the motions (the same goes for rhythm guitarist Benny Yurco and drummer Matt Burr). His craft is greatly suffocated in exchange for a we're-trying-too-hard-for-radio-friendly-hooks approach. If it weren't for their side project, Blues and Lasers, I'd say Tournet, Yurco and Burr were a waste of raw talent."Paris (Ooh La La)" (aka "If I Was From Paris" - a recycled bonus track from their last studio effort), though notable when played live, has bubblegum written all over it. Annoying backup vocals, chintzy doubletracking, and a feel reminiscent of Josie and the Pussycats, the tune is now reduced to the next single plastered all over whatever teenybopper drama Disney (who owns Hollywood Records, where the quintet sits alongside labelmates Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers) forces them onto.
Eerily similar to any previous Potter ballad, "Tiny Light" (which includes the only guitar section worth mentioning, though you have to painstakingly dig through the entire melody to hear it) and "Things I Never Needed" exhibit no progress in a band whose stagnation was thought to have left with ex-bassist Bryan Dondero (his replacement, Catherine Popper, is barely noticeable throughout).
The subsequent songs don't fair much better.
There's a frisky Potter squeal here and there, but each number sounds forced, with not one selection holding your attention for another spin. The sound is hollow and, at times, repetitive. It seems the only saving grace is "Medicine"-- a meaty number, but one that could be taken as cheesy when placed in context of the entire album.
The phrase "personal sabotage" comes to mind.
It's a damn shame the band has apparently traded their signature organic blend of soul for the cliché of rock stardom. At one time they hinted at a winning formula -- a secret formula that the woman with incredible pipes traded in for high heels, sequin miniskirts and, frankly, terrible songs.Honestly, the whole thing tends to make a mockery of any previous endeavors or accolades. But, as they say, having a gift from God is one thing, knowing how to properly use that gift is a whole other ballgame. One can only hope this is just a bump on a long and hopefully bountiful road for the Vermont darlings. And one can also hope that this is the record that gets the bullshit out of their collective system, and that they can come back reinvigorated and ready to actually make music that's worth listening to.
In the words of Jeff Bebe of Stillwater, "And let me say what nobody else wants to say: your looks have become a problem!"

Wow, Garret. Nicely done! I haven't heard the album, but I have to applaud your honesty. And if the performances on the wax are anything like the live shows, I have a feeling it will truly be all Hollywood. Kinda like that video....

Old School GPN fan

Being a big Fan of GPN since they very beginning and seeing numerous live shows over the years... I have to agree with Garret. The minute I heard they signed with Hollywood Records (and I knew the crap that company produced)I had a bad feeling of the direction the band was going to take. I was happy when I heard the band was scrapping the "GWEN/Grace" Album for more of a band album. However, the songs and the attitude are just too slick and produced on the new album. Maybe I'm just an old fan waxing nostalgic for the band I fell in love with all those years ago... I hope they get back to their roots and make another "Nothing but the Water" something with more soul and less flash.

This reviewer must have gotten the wrong record. GPN's LAST record (This is Somewhere) was a pile of crap. This new one is actually fantastic. Most telling is that there is no mention of the 5 or 6 strongest tracks on the record, just the first few and the last. But what do you expect from some chump critic who probably still thinks Phish are relevant.

I completely agree with this review. I was a big GPN fan years ago, but recently their music and attitude has become too narcissistic and commercially poppy for my liking. I preferred GPN when Grace covered up her cooter and the band played soulful rock n' roll.

even though i'm a fan of the band, i respect the writers big balls and honesty because its pure entertainment! let's not 4get that far fetched reviews date back to the 70's when rags like rolling stone completely missed the mark on albums like Exile on Main St and acts like Led Zep. and wilco was the center of eerily similar state of mindesque bashing when they parted ways with the late great Jay Bennet.

First of all, I would like to note that I am using my actually name (ThomYorke420... you douche/ big pretend tough guy, totally bad ass on the 420 (do you smoke pot?) but I digress). But hey, disregarding young farm pets, I know Garret, and this is the guy that made Grace Potter and the Nocturnal existent in my life. And a long story short, it's a shitty album. how do I know one might ask? Garret gave an exquisite compare and contrast example. He played the first album (long live rock) and the played the album in review (fuck Brittney Spears). There is a great, talented band dying here. So that I why I say Thank You Garret Woodward for, and to end on the Almost Famous quotes: "If you want to be a true friend to them, be honest and unmerciful!!!" As for me, I be downloading, and looking forward to, songs off their first two albums (again, thank you Garret Woodward).

wow... these comments are insane. Let's clear up a few things - don't ever use "Phish being relevant," or "Exile on Main St." or "Wilco and Jay Bennett" or "the Burlington Free Press" in the same sentence with this group or in defense of this group. Kudos to them for playing the game and trying to make bank – there’s nothing wrong with that (and they’re doing it really well), but let's not confuse things: a shitty record is a shitty record. This band has yet to make a good record. There's nothing inventive or even remotely interesting about the music they're making. Largely their popularity is based on playing generic rock music that’s easy to digest and sell, and they do it with impeccable style (they look amazing). Sure, immensely talented and I’m sure they’re great people, but still, the music is uninventive and disingenuous. Seeing this band live and hearing their records feels about as genuine as a Sarah Palin speech. And that works for A LOT of people.
It’s obvious the writer of this review is an old fan of the band and is pissed at the compromised bs their shoveling out. It had to be said, and good for him for saying it.
And I do love the horse in that video for Tiny Lights.

Gotta say I'm on board with Spock here. I haven't heard the new record. But I wouldn't be surprised to find that it's middle-of-the-road pop rock, because as far as I can tell, that's what GPN has always done. They're what would happen if Norah Jones could sing and had a decent band. No more, no less. Nothing interesting there, at least to me. But I guess some people love 'em, and that's OK, too.
I do have one question, though. Do you guys think Grace's legs will eventually leave the band and go indie? They are getting more and more exposure with every publicity shot. I think it's inevitable.

Spock, what exactly are you looking for in live music? Are phish and Wilco sacred calves, the standards by which you judge? What about their presentation and playing is ingenuine? I dont expect much more than passion, sincerity, and conviction in what a band is presenting, and if you've ever even seen the band and still plan to suggest they're capable of anything less, then I guess this conversation can go nowhere else, and i'll continue about my internet life disregarding your opinion. Whew, run on sentence.

re: lauren^ if it works for you and you get off on it, that’s great. There’s a lot of music that works for me that does not work for other people. But in the context of the comments here, we’re seeing people bring up Phish, Wilco and the Rolling Stones’ Exile album as points of reference to this album. And even if you love Grace Potter and are completely enthralled by their music, it’s absurd to compare this record to anyone of those artists. It’s just not even close. If you could point me to anything that Phish, the Stones or Wilco have done that feels as forced, disingenuous and contrived as that Tiny Lights video… please point me in that direction. I don’t mean to be disrespectful to your taste, but to my ears it’s a vastly different approach in writing songs, jamming, and making a statement. I just don’t hear anything that has a pulse in GP’s music. The Stones and Wilco bleed, Phish has sonic orgies with their audiences, GP and the Nocturnals merely pretend they’re doing those things, and I think that’s the point of the writer’s review.

Yawn - at this review and most of the comments. Nothing new being said. Blah-Blah - people in VT want the GPN of 2005 back.
Wide eyed and laughing - at the ridiculous comments the author wrote on thisissomewhere.com in response to critiques on his review. Funniest crap I've seen in a long time. Dude, you walked right into so many traps. Hope you learned a lesson there. Pull yourself together, man.
P.S. Spock - Stones have put out more than one crappy album, IMO. Phish "sonic orgy?" Just puked in my mouth. Talk about overindulgent and overdone. Point is - all art is subjective and NO BAND is perfect no matter how big of a fan you are. You can't argue in the way your propose. There would be no point or resolution.

Wow, harsh review. "The phrase "personal sabotage" comes to mind." That's a bit of an overstatement. This will probably be the record that's going to break them into the mainstream. Yeah, maybe it will "sabotage" their reputation that they're an act that puts out quality music - does anyone think that about the band anymore anyway?
I say good for them. There's nothing wrong with making money doing something that's fun.

Listening through the album in its entirety, I think I have to agree, GPN brings so much more live, and don't sound quite as...fake? I'm the first to admit the reason I buy studio albums is to support the bands, but this album is a one compared to the live show of a ten. I also totally understand the comment about Scott's guitar stylings, they are not as high in the mix they were expected to be.
And Grace saying that "Tiny Light" is a thoughtful song. PJ Harvey did it better with "The Whores Hustle And The Hustlers Whore". And that damn grunting/sex noises.

Bwahahaha and jebus, I agree with both your current assessments. If you want to see how scary it has gotten, something me and Garret noticed, while channel surfing the other day, that Grace and Miley Cyrus now have the same hair cut/color/characterization, but Miley always sucked (I couldn't agree more with Bill Hicks's, a fantastic comedian, idea for a tv show called: Let's Hunt and Kill Billy Ray Cyrus). If you can watch this performance, and actually say that this is not truly amazing or that she is not talented, then I would be surprised: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYrdfFpxTXQ

I can't beleive how easy it is to hype a load of crap shallow band these days...terrible songwriting, horrible record...over-rated band period! That Paris song sucks sooooo bad I won't even listen to the rest of the record, unless I was PAID to, it would make ME a sellout! Lol

I knew the band when they started at st. lawrence university. My boyfriend wrote for a newspaper after college and put out some great press for the band. Neither of us follow GPN anymore. Very sad they lost their "treat me right" kind of songs and sound. Grace used to say, "You'll never see me made up like some hollywod person." Then they sign with hollywood and get poppy. What a waste of God's gift to that girl. Blues and Lasers is awesome though. Maybe something bigger will come of that side project.
