Stephen Malkmus Talks About New Jicks Record
Mike McKinley
December 17, 2008

Stephen Malkmus told Spin that his band‚ the Jicks‚ are planning on returning to the studio in June to record their follow up to Real Emotional Trash‚ with release plans in late 2009 or early 2010.

This is great news considering‚ one‚ that it's Malkmus‚ and two‚ the Jicks -- Janet Weiss on drums‚ Joanna Bolme on bass and Mike Clark on keys and guitar -- is a phenomenal band. Here's Malkmus singing a few tunes from 2005's Face the Truth in an elevator. (The first half is great; the second half the sound is screwy.)

Phish at Bonnaroo 2009...
Mike McKinley
December 16, 2008

It's been rumored for weeks, and now Rolling Stone is reporting, based on sources close to the band, that Phish will headline two nights at Bonnaroo.

Interesting‚ huh? It feels full circle. In a lot of ways Phish's festivals‚ starting in 1996 with the Clifford Ball‚ served as the archetype for Bonnaroo. Anyway‚ this is cool news. So, no need to bitch. It's all good. Just watch this...

Song of the Day: Cat Power - "I Believe In You"
Matt Bushlow
December 11, 2008

Some songs are just a groove. And God‚ what a groove this is. Chan Marshall and her band take Dylan's exclamation of faith and give it a hard‚ slashing guitar riff‚ douse it with echo that slaps you in the face‚ and then bring the beat down with sledgehammer confidence. You can almost see Marshall strutting and preening around the mic as her voice reaches for the exposed nerves in her heart. The most powerful track on an album that embodies longing with brawn and tenderness‚ classic songs and dark‚ raw soul.

Win a Pair of Tickets to The Slip at Paradise in Boston on 12/27
Live Music Beth
December 10, 2008

This contest is now closed.

The SlipThe Slip are returning to the Paradise in Boston on December 27‚ for what will be only their second show of the year‚ and to celebrate this special occasion State of Mind is giving away a pair of tickets.

The Slip have been quiet as of late‚ busy with other projects. Together they've been writing‚ playing and plotting with Nathan Moore as Surprise Me Mr. Davis (who will be doing a NYE show days later in NYC)‚ and they did a tour as Sonya Kitchell's band. Individually‚ they've been playing in a variety of bands‚ like Marco Benevento TrioSuper Little and Land of Talk‚ and Brad Barr released his first solo album‚ The Fall Apartment. And‚ as you might recall‚ they shocked the music industry this year by releasing an album called Nine Inch Nails and giving it away for free: Get it here.

And yet‚ when the three of them get onstage and play music together‚ there's nothing like it. Don't miss this special show with co-headliner Benevento/Russo Duo.

Check out this song and video to see why, and then fill out the form below by Dec. 22 for a chance to win two tickets to the show.
