SoM Exclusive Video: Benevento/Fishman/Mathis - "You Must Be A Lion"
Mike McKinley
January 11, 2009

Last November State of Mind presented Marco Benevento Trio featuring Jon Fishman and Reed Mathis at FlynnSpace in Burlington with special guest Nathan Moore opening the show. The sold-out performance was spectacular. It was an amazing experience seeing three of my favorite improvisers playing together‚ right after a solo set by one of my favorite songwriters.

Our favorite audiophile‚ Clinton Vadnais‚ produced this video of the trio performing "You Must Be A Lion‚" a track from Marco's album Invisible Baby. I spent a lot of time with that album in 2008 and it was in my top albums of the year (see the State of Mind Staff Picks ). A few weeks ago I received a copy of Marco's new album‚ Me Not Me‚ out February 3rd on The Royal Potato Family label (pre-order here)‚ and I've been listening to that nonstop. My impression of it thus far? Yeah‚ it's incredible. And that's what I love about Marco: he continuously puts out music that surprises me‚ with his imagination and voice blooming and evolving so gracefully record to record.

A few weeks ago we posted the first video Clinton produced from that show‚ Nathan Moore performing "Understand Under‚" so check that out too.

Get Me to the Show on Time
Gary Miller
January 8, 2009

I've had a bad run of getting to shows too late. Which is cool, if you like hearing the two best tunes a band can end a set with. Last night, it happened again. I slipped into Langdon St. Cafe in Montpelier and caught the tail end of a show by Kent, Ohio quartet The Speedbumps. The 'Bumps play smart, acoustic pop arranged around the cut-to-the-soul vocals of guitarist Erick Urycki and the sweet, spare textures of cellist Sam Kristoff. You could call it folk, but it's not the lightweight, puffy-cloud stuff. If you're looking for comparables, think the Frames-or Wilco in its quieter moments.

The band is playing a show tonight at Burlington's Skinny Pancake. Then they're off to Brooklyn and points south. If you're in town, they're worth the effort-even for two tunes. I've been listening to Apple Tree, their new CD, all morning. You can check them out here

State of Mind Year-end Video (and best of stuff)
Mike McKinley
December 29, 2008

As usual, we've been busy here at the State of Mind HQ. We're getting ready to bring in the New Year right (seeing live music multiple days in a row, and straight on through until the wee hours of the morning on the first day of 2009), and we've been busy reflecting on all the great music of 2008.

To celebrate, we had to get State-of-Mind on it. That means we're having a section for our writers/enthusiasts to voice their opinions on their favorite albums and blab about some of their favorite experiences of the year. But we have to go a bit further, too. Just like your favorite band does. Or a band you sort of like that is trying really hard.

So… we also asked some musicians and industry people that we've worked with to share their favorite music moments of the year. People seem to enjoy that, plus, shit, maybe we'll score a few brownie points. And since we've always tried to make State of Mind about community, just like the experience of seeing music and sharing music is, we invited a bunch of our friends over on a recent Sunday to tell us some of their favorite albums of the year. We fed people mimosas and rummy hot mulled cider and put them in front of a camera under the great direction of Scot MacMillan and Matt Bushlow. You couldn't write this music geekology.

The full-length video, as well as our staff and our industry/artists lists will be up very soon. The video will be about 25 minutes long, and fantastic. For the time being, here's the teaser:

The Dead
Mike McKinley
December 20, 2008

Our friends over at JamBase posted this video. It looks as if The Dead will be doing some touring in 2009‚ even though nothing has been officially announced yet.

I've had the opportunity to talk to two of the four core members‚ Bill Kreutzmann and Phil Lesh‚ and both were great‚ spirited conversations. This video shows that spirit in action, and is a reminder of what freaks these guys are for playing live‚ improvisational music. Yeah‚ it got me excited to see them play music again.
