October 27, 2008

Fellow State of Mind enthusiast Doug Collette loves his Mule and is stoked to see them this week when they come to our lovely hometown of Burlington‚ Vt. Here's some cool Mule news he sent us:

During the 2004 Presidential Election‚ Gov't Mule gathered some of their friends together for a very special Benefit for Headcount at Red Rocks Ampitheatre in Colorado. This version of "Masters of War" from that epic concert features performances by Warren Haynes‚ Ray LaMontagne‚ Ben Ottewell and Jerry Joseph. Head to Mule Tracks or iTunes to download the track.

All proceeds from the sale of this download will go to benefit HeadCount‚ a nonpartisan‚ non-profit organization dedicated to voter
registration and inspiring participation in democracy through the power of music. For more info‚ and to register to vote (which it is not too late to do in some states)‚ head to Headcount.

Sample mp3 is located here:

Merl Saunders, 1934-2008
Mike McKinley
October 24, 2008

It saddens me deeply to hear the news that keyboardist Merl Saunders passed away this morning. Read the news over at Jambase.

I know Merl's playing best through the amazing work he did with Jerry Garcia and the Legion of Mary. Thanks for the music, Merl.

Song of the Day: John Mayall - "So Hard to Share"
Mike McKinley
October 23, 2008

John Mayall's live The Turning Point from 1969 is one my favorite albums. I grew up listening to this album because my mom would play it all the time. It stuck to me like glue and seems to keep getting better with age. "So Hard to Share" is my mom's favorite from the record‚ so here it is.

I've always wanted to write about this album‚ and in fact‚ I started to. But one day I got an email from State of Mind contributor Henry Soule saying‚ "There's this album by John Mayall that I think would make a great 'Albums You Should Know' column in State of Mind…" So‚ I thought how interesting it would be to hear someone else's perspective on an album that I cherish so much. He did a great job - it's on page 10 of our latest issue‚ which you can read here.

Song of the Day: Ray LaMontagne - "How Come"
Live Music Beth
October 21, 2008

I've been addicted to the new Ray LaMontagne album‚ Gossip in the Grain. Can't… stop… so…. good. When it ends in iTunes‚ Trouble‚ his also-amazing album from 2004‚ starts up‚ so I've been getting a good dose of that one as well.

I'll be picking a new one out for a future Song the Day‚ but today "How Come" off of Trouble stands out to me. Besides always making me think he's about to break into "Feelin' Alright" (can you hear it? gets me every time)‚ the lyrics hit right home with me‚ and now so more than ever. Is change on the way? I sure hope so…

Ray LaMontagne - "How Come"

People on the street now
Faces long and grim
Souls are feeling heavy
And faith is growing thin
Fears are getting stronger
You can feel them on the rise
Hopelessness got some by the throat you can see it in their eyes
I said how come
How come
Everybody on a shoestring
Everybody in a hole
Everybody crossing their fingers and toes
Government man spin his politics till he got you pinned
Everybody trying to reach out to each other
But they don't know where to begin
I said how come
I can't tell
the free world
from living hell
I said how come
How come
all I see
is a child of god
in misery
I said how come the pistol now as profit
The bullet some kind of lord and king
But pain is the only promise that this so called savior is going to bring
Love can be a liar
And justice can be a thief
And freedom can be an empty cup from which everybody want to drink
I said how come
I can't tell
the free world
from living hell
I said how come
How come
All I see
is a child of god
in misery
I said how come
It's just man killing man
Killing man
Killing man
Killing man
Killing man
I don't understand
It's just man killing man

Radiohead's In Rainbows Sales Data Revealed
Live Music Beth
October 20, 2008

WOW. Just got this email from Radiohead's publicist:

Little more than a year since Radiohead's October 10‚ 2007 pay-what-you-like self-release of its seventh album‚ In Rainbows‚ some conclusive statistics were made available at the recent "You Are In Control" conference in Reykjavik‚ Iceland.

For those who missed coverage of the conference while engrossed in something as trivial as the Presidential Debates or the world economic collapse‚ the following is a summation of key answers to FAQs:

* In Rainbows has sold three million copies thus far‚ a figure that includes downloads from Radiohead.com‚ physical CDs‚ a deluxe 2-CD/vinyl box set‚ as well as sales via iTunes and other digital retailers.

* The In Rainbows deluxe edition sold 100‚000 copies via Radiohead fan service W.A.S.T.E.

* Radiohead made more money prior to In Rainbows' January 2008 physical release than its total take on 2003's Hail To the Thief.

* The physical release of In Rainbows entered both the US and UK charts at #1 in January‚ despite having been freely available since October 2007.

* In Rainbows was the first Radiohead album available on iTunes‚ where it went in at #1 in January‚ selling 30‚000 in its first week.

In Rainbows also owns the singular distinction of being the first record widely regarded as album of the year in advance of its actual physical release: By the time TBD/ATO released In Rainbows to retail on January 1‚ 2008‚ the digital version had already topped the 2007 year-end lists at NEW YORK‚ THE NEW YORK TIMES‚ ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY‚ NPR‚ TIME‚ PEOPLE‚ ROLLING STONE‚ BLENDER‚ SPIN‚ THE LOS ANGELES TIMES and many more.

Radiohead recently concluded a world tour in Japan‚ one that sold over 1.2 million tickets.
