Song of the Day: Brad Mehldau Trio - "Knives Out"
Mike McKinley
October 20, 2008

The opening track off of Brad Mehldau's Day Is Done, from 2005, is a cover of Radiohead's "Knives Out." This is Mehldau's first record with Jeff Ballard on drums, replacing the ten-year veteran of the trio, Jorge Rossy. Immediately the space they're playing in is deep. They weave around the haunting melody, digging further and further into a conversation filled with ideas both subtle and bold. It was their first take of this song and it perfectly captures how brilliant they play together. There's a lot of spontaneous magic captured here -- they couldn't make it sound the same if they did another take.

My Favorite Clip on YouTube (Part 2)
Mike McKinley
October 17, 2008

In light of the fact that most people who want to see Phish in March, unfortunately, won't, and in light of the fact that Ticketmaster's web site will probably crash tomorrow at 10:01‚ here a clip that serves as one of the perfect reminders why. It comes from the Island Tour '98 jam out of "Twist."

And the runner-up this time is based on a recommendation made from Sir Joe Russo, who said this was a must-see while we were throwing back Bailey's like it was our effin job last weekend.

Song of the Day: The Felice Brothers - "Frankie's Gun"
Matt Bushlow
October 17, 2008

I saw The Felice Brothers live a few months ago, and they owned the stage. From the first song, they were raucous, loose and charismatic as all hell. I read a description online that put them somewhere between Dylan and Old Crow Medicine Show. I'd say throw in a liberal amount of The Band and you're getting there. If they didn't burn up the stage, those references wouldn't matter. But they do.

This video of "Frankie's Gun" is a perfect example. You can tell the crowd is going nuts, the band is as confident as can be, and the drummer, Simone Felice, gets so worked up he can't help himself but get up off his stool and just beat the shit out of his cymbals. I wish I had that much fun at work. These guys are touring like crazy, so if you like this, go check them out: thefelicebrothers.com

And here's the studio version from their album The Felice Brothers, which came out last March.

Song of the Day: Benevento/Russo Duo - "Becky"
Mike McKinley
October 16, 2008

Today's groovy cut is called "Becky" off the Benevento/Russo Duo's 2005 release, Best Reason to Buy the Sun. You might remember all the kids dancing too this shindig starter way back in the spring and summer of 2005. It spent a remarkable 36 weeks in the #1 spot on all the important charts.

And they just happen to be playing in my town tonight - Yowzer!

Song of the Day: Angels of Light & Akron/Family - "Dylan Pt. 2"
Mike McKinley
October 15, 2008

Someone left a comment earlier today about the Seth Olinsky interview (read it here)
saying "Dylan Pt. 2" off of the Angels of Light & Akron/Family record was the best song ever. I guess that's one of the cool things about Akron/Family: when people connect with them‚ they really connect.

In other Akron/Family news‚ it looks like they just headed back into the studio to start working on their next record.
