Mike Gordon Live in Colorado Release‚ Plus More Shows Announced in December
Mike McKinley
September 26, 2008

If you haven't read the new issue of State of Mind with Mike Gordon on the cover‚ read the digital version here, or hold it in your hands by purchasing a copy here. I did several interviews with Mike for the cover story - over 4 hours of tape. There's ton of great stuff on improvisation‚ his new band‚ dreams, books, playing with Phish and the making of his new album‚ The Green Sparrow. In the coming weeks‚ we'll be putting up different sections of the interviews that didn't make it into the article.

The bands' show from the Fox Theater in Boulder‚ CO flowed wonderfully from start to finish. You can hear the band really start to gel‚ spontaneously finding great pockets to stretch out. The download and CD of the show is now available for purchase over at Live Phish. Enjoy the series of linear and non-linear thuds.

I was fortunate enough to see one of the band's first gigs‚ a few middle gigs and the last gig of the tour. It was an amazing transformation from the first to the last - more risk taking‚ more patience and relaxation, and a band that's a lot tighter. Don't miss the upcoming shows in late December…

December 27 Lupo's Providence‚ RI
December 28 Portsmouth Music Hall Portsmouth‚ NH
December 29 The Pickle Barrel Killington‚ VT
December 30 Higher Ground Burlington‚ VT

Michael Moore's New Film Available for Free Download/Stream
Live Music Beth
September 23, 2008

Michael Moore is radioheading his new film‚ Slacker Uprising. You know‚ radioheading... giving away for free a work of art that one could have gotten paid for. While other musicians have followed Radiohead's lead and given away their albums‚ this is the first major feature-length film to be released on the internet for free. Good ol' Michael Moore.

Slacker takes a look at Moore's experiences on a college-campus tour to get out the youth vote for John Kerry for the 2004 election. (Or perhaps I should say, to get George Bush out of office‚ since it seemed most people were more voting against Bush than voting for Kerry.) You know how that ends. Sigh. But Moore says what he encountered was "both inspiring and frightening‚" which‚ just like his other work‚ makes for a good watch.

Moore says he's doing this for two reasons: to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of Roger and Me (if you haven't seen it‚ put it in your queue -- it's getting on in years but is just as relevant as ever) and to encourage new/young voters to get out this November. Here's hoping it helps.

Here's the trailer. Click here to download/stream the entire film for free.
